The application process for residency at Good Neighbor Village is a multi-step, but efficient process. When one's family member is considering residency at The Village, we realize and respect the fact that there is a period of adjustment. To prepare for this, we ask that all prospective residents visit us for at least three full days and nights. This gives the resident the opportunity to learn more about Good Neighbor Village, and it also gives the staff and administration of The Village the opportunity to get to know the prospective resident. Most of the residents who come to live at The Village have never lived away from home before. When our residents leave their home for the first time and move to Good Neighbor Village, it presents a new dynamic in the family that never existed before. During this period of adjustment, and after, our staff, administration and board all take part in working with the family to ensure that the transition is as seamless as possible. In addition to the family, the staff, administration and our board, the residents also have another resource - their neighboring residents and friends at Good Neighbor Village. Many of our board members have shared the experiences of raising a child with mental retardation, educating their child, helping their child grow up, and eventually helping this child enjoy the independence that accompanies the transition into adulthood. Their experiences with families in similar situations have prepared them to help. We look forward to the opportunity to help your family as your family member learns to be, to the extent of their abilities, as independent as possible. Application for Full-time Residence or Respite Visits: Full-time Residential Services are provided to adults over the age of 22 who have a diagnosis of mild to moderate mental retardation Part-time Respite Services are also available. Respite service may not exceed 21 consecutive days or 90 days total in a calendar year. An application packet is available for either type of service by contacting: Sandy Thompson Or, you may contact Sandy by e-mail at sandy.thompson@goodneighborvillage.org. All residents must have medical insurance and are responsible for their own spending money. The residents or their families are responsible for medical and dental costs, including medications not otherwise covered by insurance. Requests for medical records, psychological reports and confidential financial information are part of the application packet. Your support is appreciated. (804) 795-9813 |
