We are proud to provide our residents with daily activities and routines that help them establish good habits and be prepared for the day ahead. Our staff supervise residents throughout the day, from the moment they wake up to the time they wind down and well after. Above all, our staff always encourages individuality, allowing our residents to be their happiest, healthiest and most fulfilled selves.
We always encourage families to visit as often as they would like. We are more than happy to have you join us for a daily mealtime, recreational activity or just a simple visit to their cottage.
When residents wake up, our staff is there to supervise and help them prepare for the day. After making breakfast, many residents go to work or attend day programs; our staff is prepared to help them get to and back from. If residents do not have a job or day program to keep them occupied, our staff remains onsite to supervise.
We encourage residents to enjoy their days by walking around the grounds, watching television programs, playing cards, doing puzzles, playing on their gaming devices, jamming out on some instruments, drawing or coloring, socializing with other residents and much more. The types of activities you enjoy most are likely found here at Good Neighbor Village!
In the evenings, the staff prepares dinner, and all the residents join in on a family-style dinner together. Afterward, each resident performs their simple daily chore assigned to them (clearing the table, rinsing or washing dishes, taking out the trash, etc.).
On the weekends, our staff plan and participate in communal activities, such as ice cream socials, movie nights, outings to the local bowling alley or shopping center, local events and more.
We always encourage our residents to get to know one another and socialize on a daily basis. We find this can be incredibly helpful during the transitional period and well after. If residents struggle to socialize, our staff members are always around to help encourage, provide comfort and allow individuals to take their time in getting to know their neighbors.
Residents are encouraged to participate in our sponsored activities, from picnics to seeing a movie at the theater to playing games and so much more. For families interested in seeking out further summer socialization activities for their resident, Camp Easter Seals UCP Virginia and Camp Rainbow Connection are two organizations that provide those experiences for adults with intellectual disabilities.
Yes. When families want to take their villagers out for a day, all we ask is that a family member let staff know, sign the resident out in the books located near the door of their home and sign them back in upon return.
Of course! Families can absolutely bring their villagers home for the weekend; we just ask that a family member communicate this with our administration ahead of time so we can staff accordingly.
We have staff members who drive residents to and from appointments. We also work closely with resident employers to arrange daily transit.
Good Neighbor Village is not associated with any religious denomination. However, your resident is welcome to attend church on a regular basis, and our staff members are available to travel to and from church with residents and stay with them during the service.
